Research Topics: Brainstorming
~Idea: Becoming an RN
Questions: Am I able to become a registered nurse, or do I have to be a certified nursing assistant first? Are there alternative programs available to gain extra experience in the nursing field? What percentage of nurses make it into the desired nursing field they have selected? What are the percentage outcomes of nurses remaining RN's in the first five years?
~Idea: How to write a novel
Questions: Do I have to be a great speller, and good at punctuation? On average, how big is a writers imagination? What is the average amount of time an author will spend writing a book? How will they know when they want to end it, or keep the story going a little while longer? Are most of the novels based on real life experiences, or a desire to get a certain point across to the readers? Does voice vary depending on the topic the author is writing about?
~Idea: How to recycle
Questions: How will I know if an item is something I can recycle if its half recyclable and half not? Is there a certain way I should recycle, (separating aluminum plasitc, and cardboard)? Which recycled material is the most commonly recycled? On average, what is the amount of money, per year, saved by people recycling? Are plastic bags separate from plastic bottles when recycling even if they're both plastic?
~Idea: Interviewing someone famous
Questions: When in your life did you realize what you wanted to do, and stuck with it? How long did it take until your breakthrough, where everyone made you a household name? How did you take your first critic? What is it like to be chased by strangers? Are you more paranoid now because of the fame?
~Idea: How to be involved with the community
Questions: Where or how do you start, with volunteering? Are there fundraisers I am able to organize, or do others arrange them, and I would just help? How does volunteering benefit an organization? Do all volunteers see the same vision of doing something for the community, or are they doing it for a different reason? What is the most common type of volunteering done in the community?
~What I think the most serious problem in the world is, and why?
~How and what it takes to become a professional golfer.
~What is a planet in the solar system we may have a chance of living on besides Earth and Mars?

Logical Fallacies
This fallacy is an example of Non-Sequitur. It is Affirming the Consequent, meaning "it does not follow". The image is saying that some penguins are old tv shows. No they are not. This argument is an invalid argument set up because a penguin and an old tv show happened to have one thing in common; the colors black and white. But this doesn't mean that penguins are old tv shows. They are very much two separate things with just colors as a common item.
This fallacy is one of the most recognized fallacies. It is a fallacy of distraction, and categorized under false dilemma. Either you can love America, or you can leave it is what is the picture portrays. Simple as that. Point A to point B, and you have it. In all honestly though, it's not really that basic. This image is only providing two options, when really there are many options that are available. Summing it up, its easier to say that in the picture, there are no middle grounds. In all reality this is a fallacy of a false dilemma, and there really are middle grounds.
The last fallacy illustrates Eva Longoria, a gorgeous model/ actress. This advertisement is a fallacy of Appeal to Popularity (argumentum ad populum). Eva is a talented woman with a great career in the modeling business as well as the acting business. Look, she is using Loreal to get great hair like that! So if you buy Loreal products, you will have the exact hair like Evas and be just as gorgeous. Well folks, this is false. More than likely Eva is not using Loreal daily she is just modeling her wonderful hair because she has it. In turn, giving business to Loreal because of who is "using their product."

Logical Fallacies Response
The Jon Stewart clip was filled with many fallacies and was quite hysterical. The first fallacy I noticed was an Inductive Fallacy. Mr. Hodgman used Hasty Generalization when he showed the news clips about disease coming back to America. The news broadcasters said that some immigrants have brought back diseases we thought were wiped out. After the clips, Hodgman said the newscasters had it "exactly right," in that all illegal aliens have tuberculosis and leprosy. This is a hasty generalization. Not all illegal immigrants have tuberculosis and leprosy! Another fallacy that is presented by Hodgman is Anonymous Authorities. Before the video clips, Hodgman said, "There was a larger concern here, one that my fellow television experts picked up on." Well, who exactly are your television experts picking up on these clips? If they are experts, why are the experts not named? When the authority is not named it is impossible to confirm that the authority is truly an expert, it just sounds better to say television experts versus who these people really are. Another fallacy presented was Appeal to Authority. Multiple times throughout the video clip, Jon Hodgman made jokes, or mocked what the newscasters were saying. The clips had bits and pieces removed, and Jon Stewart was saying what the newscaster would say on the clips, before the clips were presented. Addressing fallacies comically by watching the clip of The Daily Show helped me see fallacies easier than I had before.

Newsbank is a helpful source because it provides many compacted articles that are condensed and summarized from all over the world. Also there are many ways you are able to refine your research to find exactly what you're looking for. Homosexuality has turned into a major issue over the past couple of years. When researching, I noticed that most of the con articles referred back to the Bible as a main reason why gay marriage should not be tolerated. Meanwhile, the pro articles stated their opinion that we should accept anyone any way they are no matter what. Either way, Newsbank is a great database to use to reasearch any topic. It guarantees both sides of a topic as well with the multiple articles that are available to search through.

Persuasive Writing: Health Care
http://www.postcrescent.com/article/20101011/APC0602/10110424/Editorial-Health-reform-provision-may-need-more-reform
http://www.startribune.com/opinion/editorials/105070544.html?page=2&c=y
The health care topic has been a controversial issue for many months. After reading multiple articles I selected two that helped me see both sides of the health reform. This reform due to take effect in 2014 will affect all Americans. One author thinks there will be people trying to cheat the system and the other editorial stated that people are not aware of the benefits they are eligible to receive from the health care reform because they may not know about it or how to join. However both views as I see it are different. One article states how we "need to find a way to make this work." Is this author concentrating too heavily on the reform passing? The other article states that "premiums of $5,000 to $7,000 a year are unaffordable." Both do however agree on adjustments that need to be made in order for the health care reform to be effective as it should. The authors have similar stands on the topic being they both seem to be fighting for health care, but want the flaws to be perfected as soon as possible. The second article is more convincing to me because it provides more supporting depth, and evidence supporting why they feel the health reform will work if the concentration is applied more on improvements. But how much is the government able to reform without losing too much? I believe article two provides a general idea of how it is able to happen. One example they mentioned was to make an enrollment period to sign kids up, for example. This would eliminate people from taken advantage of the system after they find out they are extremely sick and need the health care to get cheaper health care costs. I do appreciate looking at the health care reform and look into it without having already formed a solid opinion.

Tim O'Brien Response
Tim O'Brien has a talent when writing. He shows the reader and doesn't tell the reader. Through the writing passage he demonstrates depth, voice, and pulls the reader in quickly with his amazing writing ability. When I watched the video clip I loved the way he explained his goals versus other authors' goals. Tim explained how other authors' goals in their writing was more abstract whereas his goal is "to capture the heart, the stomach, and back of the throat." That's definitely showing and not telling. He also said the word war has a glaze. When I hear this I immediately think of a dying soldier or men in combat, yet I've fallen into the category he explains as the mythology we have created about the war. The reality of war is fighting doesn't solve everything, sometimes it's just a word to resolve the matter. He had to serve in the military to make this observation. I would say that him serving in the military during Vietnam has affected his morals and how he wants to portray his voice through his writing. From his experiences he can visualize what he has been through in Vietnam. It helps others who have never served in the service. We are lucky to have a strong writer that's willing to help us paint a picture in our minds, and eliminate the label we have created for war.

Show! Don't Tell
He was shy.
I saw him for the first time sitting, alone, at a coffee shop. People walking by did not distract his concentration on the television, it remained as constant as the morning sun glaring on a skyscraper. The coffee occupying his right hand steamed strongly as he diligently removed the lid and waited for the coffee to cool. The aroma of an amaretto americano filled the morning breeze with a sweet tang. He moved his fingers round and round, looking as if he was thinking, thinking of something to occupy the time. All the while he could be socializing. Was he scared to start a conversation? Scared to ask for a newspaper or a journal? "Hello, my name is Lo, what is your name?"

Dialogue Practice
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. Carlos scrambled to pick up the paper plates from the kitchen table, “I’m coming!” Seconds later he noticed the mess he had made on the kitchen floor. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.
“Carlos it’s me, Tammy, your next door neighbor.”
“Carlos it’s me, Tammy, your next door neighbor.”
“Ahhh, be right there,” he yelled as he grabbed a rag to wipe up the remaining crumbs on the floor. He threw the rag in the dish piled sink and ran for the door. “Hi Tammy, how’s it goin’?”
“Well ya know, just came by to see if ya wanted to go out for breakfast, grab some grub. How much money do ya have?”
Reaching for his pockets, Carlos was aware he was broke as a bum. Digging the lint and loose change out of his pockets he stammered, “I have about thirty-five cents.”
“Thirty-five cents? Huh, guess I’ll just see what Bob’s doin, see ya lata.”

Free Writing
Watching a child being born was the best experience I have endured in life. Watching my sister give birth to her second child had many thoughts running through my head. This was someone that was part of her, a little creation coming to the world. I could only imagine what her little boy was going to be like when he got older; curly hair or straight, funny or shy, normal or a genius? At the hospital I remember being with my sister when she started having contractions. It was absolutely scary! Unlike the first, she wouldn't have to be induced. I knew that baby Aden was coming, but when?! My sister, Heather, was bound determined to make it to Walmart before she got to the hospital. She had to get those darn baby clothes that ended up being too small for the little guy. After arriving at the hospital she was not given an epideral or any medicine when she was having contractions. Neither the doctor or Heather knew how big the baby was going to be. I remember clearly Heather pushing to get Aden out and the doctor watching tv. Of all things, tv. Every time she would push, Aden's head would pop out and go right back in, it must've seemed like all that effort had gone down the drain. She looked really exhausted until the doctor told her the baby was coming. Heather looked like she had an epiphany and worked harder and harder. Aden was born weighing in at 9 lbs 13 ounces! The nurse and doctor got him cleaned off and Heather held her beautiful boy.
Riding on a train for two and a half days was quite an adventure. I was with my two sisters and my dad. Being in 6th grade I thought this was way cooler than riding on an airplane. The first day was the day my sisters and I did all the exploring. My favorite event was waiting for the doors to open between each of the boxcars and jumping over the cable from where they connected. The first door opened to reveal a lounge with seats along the window and in the middle of the isle along with tv's mounted on the walls. We watched the first Harry Potter movie that first couple of hours. After the movie we went downstairs to the cafe to get some grub. Never being on a train before I had no idea the extent of the cost of food. I went first when ordering, I got a burger and fruit snacks, mine totaled $6.00! After the first day of eating the food I couldn't wait to get off the train and get some real good tasting food in my tummy. Our first stop was in Chicago. We had a three hour delay before our train would be on its way to our destination, Waterloo Indiana. Looking at the way the city was versus a small town like Kalispell was definately a comparison. One block would be littered with trash and the next would be clean as a whistle. In Chicago there were tall buildings almost making me feel clasterphobic. I liked looking up at the Sears Tower. On our way back to the train station to board I saw kids no older than me running around, selling candy bars to raise money, how cool! We rode the train through the second day and into the third the instructor announced we were pulling in Waterloo. I will always think about the experiences I had on the train and the breathtaking views I got to observe and enjoy with my family.
When I was in elementary school I knew I was a shy kid compared to others. Sitting in class if the teacher asked who had the answer I would know it but I wouldnt want to speak up and say anything for the lack of confidence and the feeling that I might be wrong. I happened to be one good speller. This was my last year in elementary school and I was looking forward for something that would make me remember it very well. The geography bee had already passed and I kept thinking of the talent show or the spelling bee that was coming up. Knowing I loved to read and I was a decent speller, I entered the spelling bee, not expecting to win. When the day came for all the oldest classes to compete for the top 3 seats I knew one of them had to have my name on it. When it came down to the finalists, I happened to be one of them. Getting ready for the spelling bee that following week was nerve racking, and then the time came. At school that day I kept thinking of a million words that were running through my head and how to spell them and sound them out. The finalists were taken out of class early that day to go to the gymnasium and get ready for the competition. As all 20 contestants took our seats the ultimate rush began. I was speller number six. When my first round came about I was given the word glucose. With my teachers and fellow classmates looking at me I nearly forgot how to spell the word. G-L-U-C-O-S-E. It was correct! After getting the initial first word out of the way I began to feel more comfortable on stage and in front of everyone spelling the words that were given to me. Then it came down to one of my close friends and I. She was the winner of the geography bee. I knew I couldn't break my concentration. She went, correct! I went, correct! The final round was an all out battle for the title. After multiple rounds of competing, I had claimed my victory and was declared the winner of the spelling bee. At that moment I came to a realization that if I wanted something badly I knew it wasnt impossible.

Have You Ever...
Have you ever won a spelling bee?
Have you ever slammed your thumb in a car trunk?
Have you ever caught a sucker fish and placed it in the highway?
Have you ever gone huckleberry picking and fell down a hill?
Have you ever sang and thought no one could hear you but someone was listening?
Have you ever watched a child being born, real life?
Have you ever hit a deer that is flying that someone else just hit?
Have you ever got stranded on a lake all by yourself?
Have you ever been city queen?
Have you ever been on a train?
Have you ever pet a baby deer?
Have you ever caught a bat?

Google Response
I realize after watching the video about Google Docs how resourceful and efficient the program is to use. I am able to maintain organization and upload important documents from my computer to utilize at any time. Whether it's in class or at work, Google Docs provides the tools to edit and create documents, sharing them with the people I desire. I am able to use spreadsheets, word documents and create presentations all in the same application. Google Docs also simplifies communication by allowing multiple people to work on the same document and have it published sooner than working in a classroom and printing a final document. All in all the application is a positive way to stay connected and advance communication.
